Restylan® is a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin. Restylan® is indicated for treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Every time you smile, frown or squint you put stress on the underlying collagen in the skin which results in the development of facial lines. Restylan® is a cosmetic dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that already exists in the human body. Restylan® maintains its shape using the body's own moisture. Restylan® is free from animal proteins. Restylan® is injected into your skin through a fine needle administered by a doctor or nurse. It is a relatively painless procedure that is also convenient and simple.
Restylan® has been used in more than 3 million treatments 7 in over 70 countries and is now approved in the U.S. for the treatment of facial wrinkles and folds
Restylan® is an injectable filler which may be used during an office–based procedure to treat unwanted facial creases and moderately deep wrinkles by augmentation of the underlying soft tissue. It is predominantly made of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the body that is highly attracted to water and binds moisture with great ease. This feature affords Restylan® it's ability to fill in wrinkles and creases by bringing water (and therefore volume) to the area of concern, providing a soft, supple enhancement that looks very natural.
Restylan® is the first cosmetic dermal filler made of non–animal based hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the human body and is used to provide volume and fullness to the skin. The hyaluronic acid in Restylan® is a crystal–clear gel called NASHA or Non–Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid. NASHA is biodegradable and fully biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid. This natural substance found in the body is highly attracted to water and binds moisture with great ease. As such, Restylan® can fill in wrinkles and creases by bringing water (and therefore volume) to the area of concern, allowing for a soft, supple and very natural–looking enhancement.
Restylan®, composed of hyaluronic acid, is found naturally in your skin and other tissues and is not of animal or human origin. Hyaluronic acid has a chemical structure similar in many ways to sugar and is identical in all species and in all tissue types, making Restylan® a very safe product for you.
Dr. Bengt Ågerup, and the company Q–Med in Uppsala, Sweden, after many years of research succeeded in developing a way of using a Non–Animal, Stabilized, Hyaluronic Acid to replace the loss of volume in the skin. The first application, Restylan®, was launched in 1996. Prior to this, only collagen made from cow hide and hyaluronic acid made from rooster combs were available.
Most candidates for Restylan® injections are looking to improve unwanted facial creases and moderately deep wrinkles. Restylan® is commonly used to treat the nasolabial fold, or smile line, that is formed by the border of the cheek and upper lip. Other patients are looking to simply enhance or sculpt the overall shape of the face and lips in a minimally invasive, non–surgical manner. Restylan® can also be used for contour enhancement of the lower eyelids, cheeks, and jowl region to mimic a non–surgical facelift (popularized by the term 'lunch time lift'). Restylan® is ideal for patients interested in facial enhancement and seeking a more vibrant, youthful look with minimal downtime.
Look in the mirror and decide where and how much result you are expecting. Communicate your expectations to your physician before the treatment and ask if this is possible.
Restylan® requires no pretesting, but you should take a few precautions before being treated. Avoid using aspirin, non–steroidal anti–inflammatory medications, St John's Wort, or high doses of Vitamin E supplements prior to treatment, because these may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Also, if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores discuss this with the doctor.
Each of us has natural lines that can be improved. Restylan® can be used to give you a long–lasting and natural beauty lift: smoothing wrinkles and folds, and giving your mouth a fuller, more sensuous appearance.
After the injection some common injection–related reactions may occur, such as swelling, redness, pain, itching, discoloration and tenderness at the implant site. They typically resolve spontaneously within one to two days. Other types of reactions are very rare, but about one in every 2,000 treated patients have experienced localized reactions thought to be of a hypersensitivity nature. These have usually consisted of swelling at the implant site, sometimes affecting the surrounding tissues. Redness, tenderness and rarely acne–like formations have also been reported. These reactions have either started a few days after injection or after a delay of two to four weeks and have generally been described as mild to moderate and self–limiting, with an average duration of two weeks. For more information, please consult your practitioner.
No, the results of several studies and experience from over 700,000 treatments indicates that a skin test is not necessary.
For wrinkle treatments topical anesthetic is not generally necessary, however it can be easily arranged at your request. When enhancing the lips, pain relief in the form of a local anaesthetic injection is often used
Topical anesthesia with or without a nerve block may be used for the Restylan® injection to maximize the patient's comfort.
The areas of concern are visually identified and Restylan® is then placed under the skin into the superficial and/or deep dermis. Placement along these layers helps to plump out the overlying skin crease or wrinkle. Restylan® augmentation for facial contouring, such as in the cheek, is done in a similar fashion but over a broader area. Restylan® injections for the lip can be done to provide a fuller red lip and/or to better define the vermillion border of the lip (the natural curve between the red and white lip). In some cases, patients also benefit from injection above and below the vermillion to address unwanted vertical lip lines. Once the injections are administered, an ice compress is used to help minimize the chances of swelling and bruising.
Restylan® treatments usually take fifteen to thirty minutes to complete.
In our experience, only a very small percentage of patients will develop bruising or swelling at the treatment site lasting beyond twenty–four hours. In some cases, you will be instructed to massage or 'pinch and roll' the treated areas for an additional several days to further smooth the injection sites and to maximize results.
Patients are able to return to work and other normal activities within twenty–four hours after the Restylan® treatment.
Patients are able to resume aerobic exercise within twenty–four hours after the Restylan® treatment
Restylan® treatment is generally very safe. In rare cases, the Restylan® may become slightly lumpy in focal areas, which typically responds to massage and/or an office–based injection of hyaluronidase to help to dissolve away any unwanted Restylan®.
The rate of reactions to Restylan® is very low. However, after Restylan® treatment, some common injection-related reactions are possible. Possible reactions to Restylan® are swelling, redness, pain, itching, discoloration and tenderness at the site of injection. These reactions typically resolve within a few days after injection into the skin and within a week after injection into the lips.
1 in 2000 treated patients experienced localized reactions, which were thought to be of a hypersensitive nature. These reactions usually consisted of swelling at the injection site, sometimes affecting the surrounding tissues. Redness, tenderness and rarely acne–like formations were also reported. These reactions either started a few days after the Restylan® injection or within two to four weeks after Restylan® injection. The reactions were generally described as mild to moderate and self–limiting with a two–week average duration.
The results of Restylan® can be seen immediately.
Immediately after the treatment you can expect slight redness and swelling. This is a normal result of the injection. The inconvenience is temporary and generally disappears in a day or two. If the inconvenience continues, or if other reactions occur, please contact your physician. The initial swelling after lip treatment may last longer. Some patients experience swelling for about a week and the lips can look somewhat uneven during this time. This means that the result directly after the treatment should not be looked upon as the final result.
During the first 48 hours after your treatment, do not massage or rub the treated area. If you have had a lip enhancement, avoid puckering your lips for the first two days after the treatment. Until the initial swelling and redness have resolved, do not expose the treated area to intense heat (e.g. in a solarium or by sunbathing) or extreme cold.
Patients can typically expect the Restylan® enhancement to last upwards of six to nine months. Because Restylan® has proven to last longer than collagen, it has essentially replaced collagen as one of the primary wrinkle therapies.
The length of time a Restylan® treatment lasts depends on the individual and many factors, including the structure of the skin, lifestyle, age, the degree of desired perfection and the injection technique used by the practitioner. Clinical experience indicates that touch–up and follow–up treatment will add to the duration. In general, follow–up treatment for lines, wrinkles and folds is needed after 6–12 months and 6 months after lip enhancement.
No, however, Restylan® dissolves naturally with time. You can choose to have the treatment done in steps if you feel uncertain about the desired result.
No, however, Restylan® is sometimes used in conjunction with surgery to help fill out wrinkles that cannot be removed by surgery.
Unfortunately, we do not yet know the cause of this but we have no reason to believe that this is an immunological reaction. The swelling is normally gone within a week after injection into the delicate lip tissue.
Yes, but it is recommended that you wait until the treated area is totally healed and the skin has normalized (normally 4–6 weeks).
So far we have seen no connection between patients with allergies and patients that report a reaction to Restylan®.
There has been no reported testing for use of Restylan® during pregnancy or lactation.
You should not expose the treated area to intense heat (e.g. in a solarium or by sunbathing) or extreme cold for the first few days after the treatment in order to avoid the risk of inflammation as the area has been disturbed. However, once Restylan® has integrated into the body, it will adjust to your normal body temperature.
The results will gradually disappear and your skin will eventually look like it did before the treatment. Receiving follow–up injections will help to maintain Restylan® correction.
Treatments are typically scheduled twice a year. Having a follow–up treatment before the product has fully dissipated may enhance the lasting effect.
Unlike rooster–derived hyaluronic acid–based products, Restylan® is free from animal proteins. This quality limits the risk of animal–based disease transmission or allergic reaction. Restylan® contains trace amounts of gram–positive bacterial proteins and should not be used by patients with a history of allergies to such material. Additionally, Restylan® lasts longer—six or more months.
Restylan® is natural, cosmetic filler that plumps up the skin to smooth away facial wrinkles. In contrast, Botox Cosmetic is a drug that relaxes the muscles underlying wrinkles. Many patients have been very pleased after receiving treatment with both products in different areas of the face.
Bovine collagen is derived from animals (cows) and requires an allergy test with up to a 3 week waiting period. Restylan® can be administered immediately–no waiting is required.
Restylan® treatments performed for cosmetic reasons alone are generally not covered by insurance, though patients will need to check with their own insurer.
